Updates Week of March 2, 2026

Public and Affordable Housing Research Corporation (PAHRC). National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC). National Housing Preservation Database (NHPD).

  • Update Details: Added new 2025 data on federally assisted rental homes and properties.
  • Impact: PAHRC NHPD data enables users to see where existing subsidized housing is located, which programs they are subsidized under, when they are due to expire, and how much risk of loss exists.
  • Geographic Availability: available for all geographies except block groups.

US Census Bureau, Building Permit Survey

  • Update Details: Monthly indicators updated to include November and December, 2025. Year-to-Date data updated to include January-December building permits for each year.
  • Impact: Use these data to understand:
    • Construction Activity & Development Planning
    • Economic & Investment Insights
    • How new development activity is affecting affordability and access to housing supply in your community.

  • Update Details: All indicators updated to include 2025 data.
  • Impact: This dataset helps users understand the state of assisted housing in their communities. This is the “supply” side of the supply-demand model of assisted housing. Users can use other data sources (ACS, HUD CHAS, HUD HOME) to better understand the demand side of the equation.

Updates Week of February 16, 2026

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Election Data + Science Lab (MEDSL). County-Level Presidential Election Results.

  • Update Details: 2024 Presidential Election Results are now available. Data is now available for Presidential Elections from 2000 - 2024. 
  • Impact: This can be really powerful data when analyzing political preferences of a population, and thus their appetite for public policy interventions. Voting is also a decent proxy for public participation in communities. Analyzing these patterns over time alongside the rest of our housing, demographic, and economic data can show how preferences have evolved as conditions have changed.
  • Geographic Availability: available for nation, state, county, and metropolitan and micropolitan areas. County-level results are unavailable for Alaska and Connecticut, as well as Kalauai County, Hawaii.

U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Local Area Unemployment Statistics (LAUS). Monthly

  • Update Details: December 2025 monthly data for unemployment rate, employment, unemployment, and labor force are now available.
  • Impact: Use the monthly BLS unemployment rate, employment, unemployment, and labor force data to understand your community’s economy and make informed decisions about workforce development, policy advocacy, community planning, workforce training programs, infrastructure development, and local business support.
  • Geographic Availability: available for nation, state, county, most metropolitan and micropolitan areas, and select place.
  • Data Recalculation to Custom Boundary: No.

U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA). Real Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Annual

  • Update Details: 2023 data for Real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and Real GDP by Industry are now available. Due to the BEA's decision to cease publication of Metropolitan GDP data, mySidewalk is now publishing this data for 2023 onward as the sum of county-level GDP within CBSAs. 
  • Impact: Use the new GDP by industry to understand how different types of business sectors contribute to your overall GDP. Is your community spread amongst many industries (diversified)? Or do only a couple industries make up the majority of your GDP? 
  • Geographic Availability: available for nation, state, county, and most metropolitan and micropolitan areas (estimates).

  • Update Details: Updated to 2025 definitions of rural areas.
  • Impact: This critical information empowers rural health departments to navigate funding opportunities more effectively, enhancing access to essential resources.
  • Geographic Availability: available for nation, state, congressional district, county, metropolitan planning organization, state house district, state senate district, unified school district, county subdivision, place, zip code, tract, and metropolitan and micropolitan area geographies.

Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). National Substance Use and Mental Health Services Survey (N‑SUMHSS) & Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT). Annual. 

  • Update Details: New 2024 Substance Use Facilities data was added. 
  • Impact: Understanding the allocation of treatment facilities and where substance use is highest is important for reducing opioid use and harm.

  • Update Details: Data values are updated to incorporate the most recent ACS Survey (2020-2024). The projected date remains at 2029. 
  • Impact: Use these data to understand:
    • How your community is expected to change by 2029 on a variety of subjects, including demographics, age, transportation behaviors, housing, and more
  • Geographic Availability: Available for all geographies

US Census Bureau, American Community Survey (ACS) Racial Dissimilarity Indexes

  • Update Details: Data values are re-calculated using the most recent ACS Survey (2020-2024).
  • Impact: A dissimilarity index measures the evenness with which two mutually exclusive groups are distributed across the geographic units that make up a larger geographic entity. We measure dissimilarity between 5 racial categories as defined by the Census Bureau.
  • Geographic Availability: Available for Metro- and Micropolitan Areas, Congressional Districts, State House Districts, State Senate Districts, County, MPO, Place, State, and Nation geographies
  • Data Recalculation to Custom Boundary: Yes.

US Census Bureau, American Community Survey (ACS) Entropy Index (Measure of Segregation)

  • Update Details: Data values are re-calculated using the most recent ACS Survey (2020-2024).
  • Impact: The Entropy Index (also known as the Theil Index of Segregation, or Shannon Entropy Index) is a powerful tool for measuring racial/ethnic diversity and segregation in geographic areas. It quantifies how mixed or homogeneous a place is and can be used to compare segregation levels across cities, counties, metro areas, and other geographies.
  • Geographic Availability: Available for Metro- and Micropolitan Areas, Congressional Districts, State House Districts, State Senate Districts, County, MPO, Place, State, and Nation geographies
  • Data Recalculation to Custom Boundary: Yes.

U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Office of Policy Development and Research (PD&R) Racially or Ethnically Concentrated Areas of Poverty (R/ECAP) Census Tract

  • Update Details: Data values are re-calculated using the most recent ACS Survey (2020-2024).
  • Impact: mySidewalk calculates R/ECAP using methodology provided by HUD, and using the most recent ACS data, for the most recent geographic shapes. HUD has not updated this data since the 2009-2013 ACS sample. For users, this represents a more timely, more accurate, and more reliable assessment of racially/ethnically concentrated areas of poverty in their communities.
  • Geographic Availability: Available for Metro- and Micropolitan Areas, Congressional Districts, State House Districts, State Senate Districts, County, MPO, Place, State, City Council, County Subdivision, Neighborhood, Tract, Unified School District, Zip Code, and Nation geographies

Longitudinal Employer-Household Dynamics (LEHD) LEHD Origin-Destination Employment Statistics (LODES)

  • Update Details: Updating the Regional Diversity Index, which is derived from LEHD LODES and the ACS. Data values are re-calculated using the most recent ACS Survey (2020-2024).
  • Impact: Regional diversity of employment to population. Calculated based on total population and total employment by block group. It quantifies the deviation of the block group ratio of jobs/pop from the regional average ratio of jobs/pop.
  • Geographic Availability: Available for State House Districts, State Senate Districts, County, MPO, Place, City Council, County Subdivision, Neighborhood, Tract, Block Group, Unified School District, and Zip Code geographies
  • Data Recalculation to Custom Boundary: Yes.

University of South Carolina (USC) Hazards Vulnerability & Resilience Institute (HVRI) Social Vulnerability Index (SoVI) to Environmental Hazards

  • Update Details: A mySidewalk-built index, following the methodology of the original HVRI study. Data values are re-calculated using the most recent ACS Survey (2020-2024).
  • Impact: The Social Vulnerability Index measures the social vulnerability of U.S. counties to environmental hazards. This has not been available at the Tract level since 2010, and mySidewalk is the only source which has the index for the most recent ACS.
  • Geographic Availability: Available for Metro- and Micropolitan Areas, Congressional Districts, State House Districts, State Senate Districts, County, County Subdivision, State, MPO, Place, Tract, Block Group, Unified School District, and Zip Code geographies
  • Data Recalculation to Custom Boundary: Yes.

  • Update Details: Updated data to use normalizers from the most recent American Community Survey (2020-2024). I.e. when calculating the number of providers per capita / per 100,000 capita, the population figures have been updated to reflect the most recent ACS.
  • Impact: Identify health care deserts or shortage areas and where they intersect with under-served populations like low-income and people of color

Jobs Proximity Index

  • Update Details: The jobs proximity index quantifies the accessibility of a given residential neighborhood as a function of its distance to all job locations within a CBSA, with larger employment centers weighted more heavily. Scores represent the percentile rank of sub-geographies within a given CBSA.
  • Impact: Identify areas within their metro areas where jobs are more difficult to access for workers. 
  • Geographic Availability: Available for Census Tract and Block Group geographies
  • Data Recalculation to Custom Boundary: Yes.

Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Broadband

  • Update Details: Updated the mySidewalk calculations using the new ACS 2020-2024 5-year estimates.
  • Impact: Use the Broadband indicators to evaluate gaps in accessibility to internet resources in your community. Broadband standards are established by the FCC Broadband Speed Guide for telecommuting and student activities (25 Mbps). Areas with high numbers of households below these thresholds are likely to face more challenges accessing employment, education, healthcare, and housing opportunities.

Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).Local Area Unemployment Statistics (LAUS). Annual

  • Update Details: Updated with the January 27, 2026 published values. Data annually available 2007 to 2024.
  • Impact: The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Local Area Unemployment Statistics (LAUS) program produces estimates on employment and unemployment for several levels of Census geographies. This data can be used to fully understand your community’s labor market and how it is changing over time.
  • Geographic Availability:  available for state, metro and micropolitan area, county, and some place geographies.

Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program. Crime in the United States (CIUS) and National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS)

  • Update Details: Updated the 2022, 2023, and 2024 rate per 100,000 people calculations using the ACS 2020-2024 5-year estimates.
  • Impact: Use FBI UCR data to evaluate crime rates in your community.
  • Geographic Availability: available for nation, state, 90% of county, 33% of CBSA, and 20% of place geographies.

The Longitudinal Employer-Household Dynamics (LEHD) Origin-Destination Employment Statistics (LODES)

  • Update Details: Added 27 new job indicators, from 2014 through 2023. These new data include jobs by worker monthly wages, race, age, ethnicity, educational attainment, sex, and firm age. 
  • Impact: Use these data to understand local and national trends in the job market, answering questions such as:
    • Where are there new private firms?  (using firm age number of jobs)
    • Where are late (or early) career workers concentrated? (using jobs by worker age)
    • What are worker wages? (using jobs by worker wages)
  • Geographic Availability: Available for all geographies

Updates Week of January 5, 2026

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)
National Risk Index (NRI)

  • Update Details: Updated the data values to the 2025 vintage, version 1.20.0. Data covers 18 different environmental hazards with hazard risk index scores, expected annual loss, and exposure. 
  • Impact: Use the expected annual loss to find the agricultural, building stock, and population impacts for different environmental hazards. Then use the data as part of your community’s planning for environmental hazards and updating of zoning, codes, and ordinances. 
  • Geographic Availability: Available for all geographies except block group, city council district, and neighborhood. 
  • Data Recalculation to Custom Boundary: The index scores, exposure, and expected annual loss data will recalculate into a custom boundary. 

US Dept of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)Comprehensive Housing Affordability Strategy (CHAS)

  • Update Details: Updated the data values to the 2018-2022 vintage. Data covers housing affordability and quality issues.
  • Impact: Use HUD CHAS data to evaluate housing affordability for grant applications, federal reporting requirements, or long-range planning. 
  • Geographic Availability: Available for all geographies except block group, city council district, and neighborhood. 
  • Data Recalculation to Custom Boundary: The data will recalculate into a custom boundary.
