We’ve arrived in March, which means we’ve been taking more walks as the temperatures get higher and the sunlight stays longer. (We can’t promise we’re all ready to spring ahead an hour this weekend though...)

To stay alert come Monday we recently got a new coffee maker in the office, but our caffeine levels aren’t all we’ve been updating. Below are some updates to the mySidewalk platform we’ve made in the last month or so to deliver you the freshest data and features, so you have the functionality you need (emphasis on the fun).

  • Bulk Component Editing
  • Dimension Normalization
  • System Data Updates
  • Visual Additions

Bulk Component Editing

We provide an array of visualization components in our platform, so we want to make it as easy as possible for you to organize the blocks you need to build your story. Until now you’ve had to individually select components to copy or delete them. Now, we’ve added the ability to select multiple components at once to either delete or copy to a new report. That means even more time saved in your workflow to focus on the story.

Simply select which components you want to edit in the top right corner and choose what you'd like to do. Think of it as loading up your cart for some bulk grocery shopping (except we're never out of your favorite items).

Dimension Normalization

To provide you more flexibility in your data stories, we've updated our normalization options to include new dimensions where applicable. You can represent your data in the way that makes the most sense with relational context. Check out the gif below for an example normalizing private school enrollment by grade to total private school enrollment.

System Data Updates

We’ve also been keeping our data library freshly stocked and dust-free for your stories, so here’s a breakdown of some updates we’ve made recently.

American Community Survey (ACS)

  • Updated percent change in enrollment characteristic types to reflect the difference between the ACS 2014-2018 and ACS 2009-2013.
  • The County Subdivision, Unified School District, and Place geographies have been updated to match the boundaries used to calculate the 5-year ACS 2014-2018 estimates.
  • Updated State House and State Senate geographies of Alabama, North Carolina, and Washington D.C. to match the 2014-2018 ACS

Indicator & Projection Year Availability

  • 2018 data for “Average Number of Jobs within 30 Minute Public Transit” is now available. This characteristic type is now available yearly 2015-2018.
  • Census projections have been updated for the 5 projected years:
    Previous 2017 → Now 2018
    Previous 2019 → Now 2020
    Previous 2021 → Now 2022
    Previous 2023 → Now 2022
    Previous 2025 → Now 2026

Visual Additions

Now we all know design is about more than looking good but...well...we can’t help but do both for you. We’ve added 14 new icons so you can personalize your callouts to represent your data with the right visuals.

For progress trackers, we created a checkbox for you to disable or enable connecting lines so you can provide maximum clarity to how your progress areas relate or not.

Our last update is a minor one with a big meaning. If you didn’t notice, we tweaked the footer on the beautiful dashboards and reports you create to better reflect the theme that fuels all of our partnerships: empowerment.

It's not only one of our core values, but it's how we remind ourselves why we do what we do. Every day you work hard and that's what inspires us. Your work is critical for your community, and we're thankful to forge new paths together. So, thank you. Thank you for solving new problems and continuing to push us to build the best experience possible for you.

Have you been making something cool you want us to see? Share it online and tag us @mysidewalkhq, or send us a message at [email protected]. In the meantime, we'll be continuing to work on our platform, squishing bugs, and experimenting brew times with our new coffee maker.
